Does renters insurance cover flooded basements?

I’m about to sign a lease on this beautiful riverside home with a great view of the water. The area hasn’t been prone to flooding before, but knowing there’s still some risk with this, does renters insurance cover flooded basements?

It sounds like that would have a great view of the river; it’s good that you’re thinking about the risk of flooding before you move into your new home. Your
renters insurance
may cover a flooded basement, but it depends on the water source and what kind of coverage you have.
Flood damage to the home itself would typically need to be covered by your landlord’s insurance, whereas your renters insurance would need to protect your personal belongings. A standard renters insurance policy would likely cover damage to your property if the culprit was a water leak or a pipe that burst.
However, if your rental home was flooded and the source of water was outside your home, like the river, you’d need separate flood insurance coverage, which is available for renters as well as homeowners through FEMA’s
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
or a private carrier. The same goes for water backup from a failed sump pump or sewage pipe, which is usually available as an add-on to your policy.
