Does home insurance have to be in the name of the owner?

My parents recently purchased a new home and let me move into their old one. I found out they don’t have a home insurance policy, so I’d like to get one. Can I put my name on the policy or will the home insurance have to be in the name of the home’s owner?

That’s awesome your parents are letting you live in their old home! Getting a home insurance policy is a smart idea but home insurance has to be in the name of the owner.
Most insurance companies require anyone getting an insurance policy to have insurable interest on the property. Owning a home or a vehicle is an insurable interest, meaning you have a reason to want a policy or coverage.
Since your parents still own the home, their names would need to be on the
home insurance
policy.
While you could technically pay for it, you’d need their information to get a policy. If cost is the main reason they’re avoiding coverage, tell your parents about
