How long can you drive with expired tags in Virginia?
My registration tags are set to expire soon and I don’t really have time to renew them. How long do I have until it's illegal to drive with expired tags?

Owning a car has its share of annoyances, and keeping up with your registration is one of them. With that said, you don’t want to be caught driving with expired tags.
When you’re caught driving with expired registration tags, the penalties can range from a small fee to your car
being impounded
. If you renew your registration after it has already expired, you’ll also have to pay a $10 fine.Although it isn’t legal to drive with expired registration tags, there was a grace period of sorts instituted in 2021. Police officers are not allowed to pull you over for the
sole purpose
of an expired registration until four months after they expire.Still, there are plenty of ways that you can get in trouble for driving with expired tags. Because of this, you should look to renew them as soon as possible. The state of Virginia offers three ways to renew:
- Online
- By mail
- In person at a DMV
You’ll have to pay less if you renew your registration online or by mail in Virginia. If you owe money to DMV for any reason, such as an unpaid ticket, you may be unable to renew.
Once you’ve gotten your registration renewed, you should take the time to revisit your car insurance plan.
