Is it bad to put a car in park while still driving?

Is it bad for my car if I put it in park while I’m still driving? I accidentally shifted my car into park while I was still driving yesterday and now I’m worried that I damaged my car. Should I take it to a shop?

It’s unlikely that you’ll need to take your car to a shop if you were driving at a slow speed when you switched gears, but it is bad for your car to
put it in park
while you’re still driving. Doing so can damage your parking mechanism, as it won’t be able to fully engage until your car stops moving.
If you put your car in park while driving at a higher speed, you might hear a clicking or grinding noise as the teeth in your parking mechanism try to catch and stop your car. In extreme cases, your car might begin to skid or lock up, which could cause an accident.
Your car is probably just fine if this is the first time this has happened. If you start to notice that your car is having difficulty parking or remaining stationary, however, it’s time to talk to a mechanic to make sure everything is functioning as it should.
