Do you need a license to drive a moped?

With the volatility of gas prices, I’m looking for ways to cut my expenses. I’ve recently been thinking about purchasing a moped, but I don’t want to take motorcycle classes or tests if I can avoid it. Do I need a license to hop on a moped?

As of 2022, 44 out of 50 states require drivers to have a license to drive a moped. But of these 44 states, only 12 of them require you to have a motorcycle license or a motorcycle endorsement. The other 32 states only require a regular driver’s license.
The six states where you don’t have to worry about a driver’s license to get a moped are: Arkansas Colorado Florida North Carolina Virginia Wyoming
Keep in mind that the size of the engine will also play a factor in whether you need a license or insurance. Some states do not require a license or insurance for a moped with an engine that’s smaller than 49cc. Consult with your DMV to find out if this pertains to you.
If you decide to buy a 49cc moped or something a bit bigger, having insurance is a good idea—whether it’s required or not. So if you want to
