No Montana does not currently have more license fees for
electric car
registration.
In May 2021, the state government looked to pass legislation that would make Montana’s EV registration fees one of the highest in the U.S. Luckily for current and future EV owners in Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte vetoed the bill as the suggested rates were far too high. The bill had proposed a $195 annual fee for smaller vehicles and up to $375 for larger trucks.
This bill was proposed as means of equalizing the lack of fuel tax EV owners pay, and regenerating state revenue for maintenance costs. The rates from the 2019 bill were deemed too high however, it is likely that Montana’s government will come up with something to subsidize road maintenance costs in the near future.
