Can you have more than one renters insurance policy?

I’m moving into a new apartment in a few months that’s in a pretty high-risk area. I’ll probably buy renters insurance to protect my belongings, but I’m wondering if I should double up on policies just in case. Can I purchase more than one renters insurance policy?

Congratulations on the move! You technically can have more than one renters insurance policy at a single time. However, it’s probably unnecessary because a single renters insurance policy covers you and your personal items both in and outside your home.
Purchasing two renters insurance policies won’t double your coverage. If you try and file multiple claims for one incident, that would be considered
insurance fraud
.
