Can you flat tow a 2019 GMC Canyon?
I just sold my 2019 GMC Canyon online, but the buyer told me that he has no way to retrieve it. He lives two states over, so I said I’d deliver it to him for a fee. The only problem is that I’ve never towed it before. Can I flat tow my 2019 Canyon?

It depends—you can only flat tow a 2019 GMC Canyon if you have the four-wheel drive version. Under no circumstances can you flat tow the two-wheel-drive Canyon, as it will cause catastrophic damage to the transmission. If you have this type of Canyon, you need to use a flatbed trailer.
If you have a four-wheel-drive 2019 Canyon, here’s what you have to do to tow it correctly:
- Position the Canyon behind the tow vehicle. Face it forward and on a level surface.
- Securely attach the Canyon to the tow vehicle.
- Apply the parking brake and start the engine.
- Shift the transfer case to neutral. If you don’t know how to do it, see page 190 of your owner’s manual.
- Turn the engine off.
- With the engine off, leave the key in ACC mode to prevent the steering column from locking. 7. Disconnect the negative battery cable and cover the negative battery post with a non-conductive material.
- Move the steering wheel to ensure the steering column is unlocked.
- With your foot on the brake, release the parking brake.
- You’re ready to tow!
