Can you drink coffee while driving?

Sometimes I run out of time getting ready and I have to take my coffee to go. If I drink it when I get to the office, I spend the first 45 minutes in a total fog. Will I get into trouble if I drink my coffee in the car during my morning commute?

There’s nothing like a good cup of coffee in the morning! While it’s not illegal to drink coffee while you’re driving, it is dangerous. This is because coffee can
distract
you in three different ways:
  • Visually, since you’ll likely have to glance down to grab your cup or tilt your head back to drink.
  • Physically, since you’ll have to take a hand off of the wheel to hold your coffee and move your head to drink it.
  • Cognitively, since coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant.
Coffee is also usually very hot, so you run the risk of burning yourself if you run into a patch of uneven pavement or a hazard in your path. For these reasons, coffee was named the most dangerous food or drink to consume while driving by the NHTSA.
