Can my relationship status change the cost of my car insurance?

I just broke up with my boyfriend and moved out of the apartment that we shared. We were listed together on the same auto insurance, but now I have my own policy. The rate has increased a little and I wondered if it is because I'm single and listed on the policy by myself. Is this the case?

“There are several reasons why your rate may have changed, but in this case, your relationship status likely didn’t impact your
car insurance rate
.
Relationship status is used as a rating factor, but only a couple of options affect your policy premium. Here are the typical choices customers have to select from when starting a policy:
  • Married
  • Domestic Partner
  • Single
  • Divorced
  • Separated
  • Widowed
Insurance companies will offer either a married discount or use marriage, and in some cases, domestic partnership, as a rating factor to help save money on your policy (meaning that there is no added charge for non-married individuals).
In your case, the relationship status of single remained. However, if the shared policy included your boyfriend’s car, the
multi-car discount
would have been removed once you started your policy. That, plus the address change, could have created an increase.
Anytime there is a significant life change is a good time to reevaluate your insurance needs. By bundling both your
auto and home insurance
together, you can save on both policies with a multi-line discount.
Using the
Jerry app
can help make this happen! Jerry collects auto and home quotes from over 50 carriers and brings the lowest available rates right to the app on your phone.”
