Can hitting a deer total your car?

One of my buddies just moved into a huge house in a rural area of Indiana, and I want to check out his new place. He told me to look out for deer, but being a city boy, I’m not used to being wary of them. Can hitting a deer total my car?

In
Indiana
and throughout most of the Midwest, deer are substantially large creatures. A whitetail buck can weigh as much as 200 pounds—so hitting a deer can total your car.
However, a couple of factors can play a pivotal role in whether or not your car is totaled, including:
  • The size of your car
  • How fast you were going
If you drive a small car at a fast speed, it’s more likely that your car will get totaled as a result of the accident.
If your car is totaled by a collision with a deer, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for repairs—unless you have
comprehensive coverage
in your
car insurance
policy.
If you don’t already have comprehensive coverage, you may want to consider adding it to your current policy or shop around for better rates with the
