Electric car batteries tend to lose a lot of juice in the cold. A Consumer Reports experiment shows that cold temperatures can affect the range of electric vehicles. Meaning you may have to purchase a car with more range than expected if you live in colder climates. The recommended amount is double whatever your daily driving needs are.
When the temperature drops below freezing, the demands on the battery will increase. So it is best to combat this by:
- Keeping the car plugged in until departure.
- Take advantage of cabin climate control presets.
Remember that the EV doesn’t lose range because of the weather but because of the power demands of driving a vehicle in colder temperatures.
