How to check your Jeep’s VIN

The vehicle identification number on your Jeep is called the VIN for short. It’s a completely unique 17-digit code that identifies your particular Jeep to whomever is reading it.

You can find the VIN in multiple spots inside and outside of your vehicle. Try checking these places:

A metal tag or sticker on the driver’s side of the dashboard

A sticker on the inside of your driver’s door jamb

Every Jeep has a VIN in one of these places. You can also find a VIN on a Jeep by checking to see if it’s stamped under the rear bumper on the driver’s side.

How to decode a Jeep VIN

You’ll need your VIN to do basically anything at the DMV. Why? What information are they deciphering from this 17-digit code?

First introduced in the United States in the 1950s, VINs were standardized in 1981 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). All VINs since now carry the same types of information across makes, models, and continents.

You’ll find all ten numerical digits (0-9) in your VIN, and most letters except for I, O, and Q. These letters are often confused with 1, 0, and 9, so it’s simpler to leave them out rather than always clarifying which character you mean.

First position: country of origin

The first three digits signify the world manufacturer identifier (WMI). The first character tells you what the country of origin for your Jeep is. Jeep has manufacturing plants in multiple countries, so pay close attention to this digit. If your Jeep was made in the US, your VIN will start with the numbers 1 or 4, while the VIN will start with J if it was made in Japan.

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

The next two digits tell you about the manufacturer and vehicle type. The second character on your VIN will likely be J, for Jeep, while the 3rd position will give you information on the type of vehicle it is. This helps differentiate a

With all this information being standardized, you may worry that someone would manufacture a fake VIN. That’s what the ninth digit is for—verifying the authenticity of a VIN. This digit is calculated using a secret formula that is immune to replication.

Position 11: assembly plant

Position 11 identifies the plant of origin for your Jeep. Jeep has plants in the US, Italy, Brazil, China, India, and Mexico. The US-based plants are in Toledo, Ohio, or Detroit, Michigan.

Positions 12-17: vehicle serial number

The last six digits of a VIN are unique to your car. This is the vehicle’s serial number, which is determined on the assembly line. These numbers identify your specific vehicle.
