How to cancel your Progressive car insurance policy

While you cannot cancel your Progressive insurance online, you can cancel by phone. Here are the steps involved in a Progressive cancellation:
  • Call this phone number: 866-416-2003
  • Say “cancel insurance policy” and then “auto”
  • Speak with a live agent about canceling your policy
If you are canceling an
insurance policy for a new car
, you may need to provide the insurance agent with information to prove that you have another policy covering the vehicle. Give the name of the new insurance provider, the policy number, and the policy’s start date.
Wait! Before you cancel your current insurance coverage, make sure that you get a new policy lined up elsewhere. Otherwise, you could have a lapse in coverage—and even a tiny gap could trigger higher premiums when you try to buy a new policy. When you contact Progressive, ask the agent to set a cancellation date after the start of your new car insurance policy.
Finally, if you’re driving a leased vehicle, make sure to inform your lender that you have canceled and switched providers.

Can you cancel a Progressive policy without calling?

No. You cannot cancel online, via the app, or by mail.
The only way to cancel a Progressive car insurance policy is by phone.
By law, the policyholder must make the cancellation phone call unless someone else has power of attorney for them.

Does Progressive charge a cancellation fee?

In most situations, no, you will not be charged a cancellation fee by Progressive. That’s standard behavior for most car insurance companies. Note that the rules in some states and policies may be different, however.
Here’s some good news: if you cancel in the middle of your policy term and before your renewal date, you should qualify for a refund of your unused premiums.

Does Progressive refund you if you cancel your auto insurance policy?

Yes. If you’ve already
paid the full insurance premium upfront
, then you can expect a refund when you cancel. However, if you pay monthly you may not be eligible for a refund depending on when you cancel.

Does Progressive have a grace period for nonpayment?

Yes. Progressive has a
grace period
of between 10 and 20 days for nonpayment, depending on your state. During this time, policyholders can make a late payment and avoid a lapse in coverage. A late payment within this timeframe may not trigger a cancellation of your coverage, but you could be charged late fees.
If you do not make a payment within this 10- to 20-day grace period, Progressive will
cancel your policy
. In this case, the DMV will be notified and you could be penalized for driving without insurance.
There’s one other type of grace period that Progressive offers, and it’s for drivers who just purchased a new vehicle. These drivers have 30 days to add the vehicle to the policy formally, but until that time the new vehicle will be covered under the same limits as the old vehicle.

Should you cancel your Progressive insurance?

It’s normal to switch insurance providers, especially if you think you could get a better rate with another company. We can’t tell you whether you should cancel your Progressive insurance, but here are some common reasons you may be considering canceling:
  • You can’t afford the car insurance rates (just remember not to go without insurance altogether if this is the case)
  • You want to add coverage (like
    comprehensive coverage
    )
  • You’ve
    moved
    ,
    sold your vehicle
, or changed your marital status
  • You want to cancel your
    gap insurance
  • You found cheaper auto insurance rates with another company
  • You purchased a
    home insurance
    or
    renters
    policy with a different company
  • Your driving record qualifies you for a better discount at another company (like a safe driver discount)
Any of these is a great reason to shop for new auto insurance quotes—but you don’t necessarily need to cancel your Progressive policy to save money.
You may be able to unlock a lower rate at the same company by increasing your deductible or bundling your homeowners insurance with your car insurance coverage, for example. Auto insurance companies work hard to keep your business, so it’s always worth asking before you make the big switch.
