background
BMW calls the X5 a “sports activity vehicle” (SAV), and with seating for up to seven, it’s a fitting title. The car also packs a punch with three turbocharged engines that range in output from 255 to 445 horsepower.
As a BMW, the X5 balances luxury and functionality. With a starting price of $53,725, the base model is slightly more expensive than the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and around $10,000 less than the seven-passenger GL-Class. And with three turbocharged engines to choose from, each model provides a quick and sporty experience.
But how much horsepower do you actually get—and what should you know before making a purchase?

2014 BMW X5 Horsepower

While each of the 2014 X5 models will get you where you want to go—and in a hurry, too—they’re not all equal.
The rear-wheel-drive
sDrive35i
and all-wheel-drive
xDrive35i
are the base models, and each comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six motor. This engine makes a modest 300 horsepower at 5,800-6,000 RPM and produces 295 pound-feet of torque at 1,300-5,000 RPM.
The 2014 X5 diesel option is the
xDrive35d
. This all-wheel-drive model comes with a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel motor that produces 255 horsepower at 4,000 RPM and 413 pound-feet of torque at 1,500-3,000 RPM.
The third—and most powerful—engine option comes with the
xDrive50i
. It’s a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged beast that makes 445 horses at 5,500-6,000 RPM and 479 pound-feet of torque at 2,000-4,500 RPM.
Each option comes with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as BMW’s start/stop feature that kills the engine while idling to increase fuel efficiency. Like other
BMW
vehicles, models with gas engines require premium fuel.
The X5 series doesn’t disappoint on the inside, either. Each vehicle comes standard with 10-way power and heated front seats, a 10.2-inch navigation screen, panoramic moonroof, power tailgate and adjustable steering column, and a nine-speaker high-definition audio system. The car seats five comfortably, and you have the option to add a third row—albeit a tight one—to bump that capacity up to seven.
If you’re looking for a used 2014 BMW X5, the base model sDrive35i starts at around $35,000. A high-speed xDrive50i will run you around $45,000. And, of course, prices for each trim will vary depending on the vehicle’s condition and mileage.
