Meet the biggest Chevy SUV: the Suburban
Chevrolet isn’t afraid to go big when it comes to trucks and SUVs, and the Suburban is the biggest SUV it offers.
Despite gigantic proportions, the Chevy Suburban exhibits a refined road manner that makes it surprisingly easy to handle. This is important when you need to maneuver nearly 19 feet of car through city streets.
To owners’ delight, all 19 of those feet are put to optimum use for acres of passenger and cargo space. The Suburban can seat up to eight passengers when optioned with the second-row bench seat. However, upper trims feature second-row bucket seats that restrict passenger space to just seven.
While you may not be able to squeeze in that eighth person, though, you lose none of the ‘Burban’s massive cargo capacity no matter which trim you choose.
In case you need more space to haul your cargo, the Suburban is a perfectly capable hauling vehicle, able to pull up to 8,300 pounds with the larger V8 when optioned with the available Max Trailering Package. Surprisingly, opting for the diesel powertrain lowers your max towing capacity to 7,800 pounds, but the increased torque makes getting through mud and muck a lot easier if off-roading is your thing.
Though the Suburban’s starting price of $57,795 is far from cheap, it’s not the most expensive option in its class. That said, the base model is a bit on the lean side when it comes to standard features, and adding options quickly increases your bottom line.
Even then, trim options for the Suburban are competitively-priced across the board with other options in the class. With top-tier trims coming in at prices nearing $80,000, a nice mid-range model is likely more than most people need.
Though some of the Suburban’s interior materials can look a bit budget (especially on lower trims), opting up to the middle-of-the-pack RST gets you a variety of more luxurious options, such as leather in the front and second rows, wireless charging pads, three-zone climate control, and a variety of driver assists.
Another benefit of the ‘Burban is that you don’t have to opt up in trim to get all the options you want. A lot of the upper-trim features are available as one-offs on lower trims—but they will cost you.

Engine and performance
Buyers have several options to choose from when it comes to the Suburban’s powertrain.
Standard equipment on all but the Suburban High Country includes a 355-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8 that achieves 383 lb-ft of torque. While all the Suburban’s available powertrains are fairly thirsty when it comes to fuel economy, the base 5.3-liter V8 is the best gas-powered option at a combined 17 mpg.
The RST, Z71, and Premier trims can be outfitted with a more potent 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. While this powertrain opens up the Suburban’s full towing capacity of 8,300 pounds, it also drops fuel economy by 1 mpg to a combined 16 mpg. This larger V8 is standard equipment on the Suburban High Country.
Finally, drivers now have the option of selecting a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder diesel engine to power their Suburban. This 277-horsepower engine creates 460 lb-ft of torque and is the most fuel-efficient of the bunch at a combined 23 mpg. Buyers can option this powertrain on any trim except the Z71.
Whichever trim and powertrain configuration you choose, the Suburban is capable of moving pretty fast—but it’s no race car. With over 6,000 pounds to move around, the fastest 0-60time for a ‘Burban, regardless of engine options, is 6.1 seconds.
