2022 Volvo compact and subcompact car models

There are currently four Volvo compact vehicles on the market—including two all-electric vehicles.

2022 Volvo C40 Recharge ($58,750 MSRP)

Volvo aims to transition to an all-electric brand by 2030, and they’re well on their way with the introduction of the brand new all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge in 2022
Is it the best compact EV from Volvo so far? To be honest—not necessarily. Car and Driver gives the small luxury SUV a neutral 7.5/10 rating, while Edmunds rates it a 7.8/10 and #6 out of 7 for luxury all-wheel-drive electric vehicles. And in this category, it’s a battle of the Volvo siblings, as the XC40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric beats the C40 by a few spots.
But the C40 isn’t all bad. Volvo’s first all-electric, all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle comes equipped with a generous array of standard safety features and plenty of performance power, along with good looks inside and out.
Highlights of the C40 Recharge include:
  • Quick acceleration
  • Digital driver information display with navigation
  • Plenty of standard safety features such as forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and surround-view parking camera system on all models
  • Pilot Assist
  • Sleek looks inside and out
Weaknesses include:
  • High price tag
  • Small cargo area
  • Unimpressive range for EV at 226 miles on full charge

2022 Volvo XC40 ($35,100 MSRP)

Looking for something small, stylish, and practical? Then the 2022 Volvo XC40 might be the luxury subcompact SUV for you. Car and Driver give the XC40 a nearly perfect 9.5/10 rating, and it also earns a spot on their Editors’ Choice List
The XC40 boasts an elegant interior with premium materials. There are also plenty of standard high-tech safety features like a rearview camera, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, and more. You and your passengers will also have the most comfortable of rides with standard leather seating, heated front seats, and a memory driver’s seat.
You’ll be in safe hands too—the luxury subcompact SUV is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner and received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Highlights of the Volvo XC40 include:
  • Tons of standard driver assistance tech
  • Upscale interior with high-quality materials
  • Ample passenger space for size
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner
  • Five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA
Weaknesses include:
  • Less-than-intuitive infotainment system
  • Small cargo area
  • Not as fuel efficient as rivals

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge ($51,700 MSRP)

If you like the sleek styling and small stature of the gasoline-powered Volvo XC40 but want to go all-electric, then consider the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge.
While the XC40 Recharge is just as practical as its gas-only twin, the luxury electric subcompact SUV doesn’t receive as high praise from the experts as the previous Volvo model. This is mainly due to its high asking price and an electric driving range of only 223 miles
But we can’t deny the power that comes with an XC40 Recharge. Equipped with two electric motors and a 402-hp electric powertrain, this electric bad boy can go from zero to 60 in an impressive 4.3 seconds. The subcompact SUV also comes with an abundance of standard driver assistance features such as forward and reverse automatic emergency braking and a surround-view parking camera system—it’s no wonder the XC40 Recharge is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner!
Highlights of the XC40 Recharge include:
  • Quick all-electric acceleration
  • Good handling
  • Handsome styling
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner
Weaknesses include:
  • Expensive
  • Mediocre driving range compared to rivals

2022 Volvo XC60 ($42,650 MSRP)

If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge into the all-electric universe, you can still get your feet wet with the compact Volvo XC60 SUV. It offers three hybrid powertrains—B5, B6, and T8. The base B5 engine is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 48V mild-hybrid inline-4, while the B6 engine adds an electric supercharger to improve performance power
But if you’re looking for even more oomph, check out the XC60 Recharge with a T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a turbocharged and supercharged gasoline engine that boasts up to 400 horsepower. You’ll also get a combined EPA-estimated 57 MPGe and a pure electric range of 19 miles on a full charge with this compact PHEV variant. But the new XC60 Recharge Extended Range model takes its performance game up a notch with 455 horsepower and 36 miles of electric range
And like most luxury compact Volvo models on this list, we can’t leave without mentioning the XC60’s status as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ due to its array of standard safety features.
Highlights of the XC60 include:
  • Chic interior and exterior
  • Many standard driving assistance features
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner
  • Large cargo space
  • Three powertrain options—including the XC60 Recharge plug-in hybrid
Weaknesses include:
  • Frustrating infotainment system
  • Stiff riding experience
