The 2022 Acura RDX costs more than the 2021 model, but it receives a noticeable facelift, modernized technology, enhanced color options, and more.
The RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura since 2007. Initially sharing its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V, the RDX began using its own platform in 2019 with the introduction of the vehicle’s third generation.
Let’s discuss the changes that the RDX has undergone since then—specifically between the 2021 and 2022 models. We’ll go over pricing, fuel efficiency, safety features, and available upgrades to help you pick between these two SUVs.
2022 Acura RDX vs. 2021 Acura RDX: What’s the difference?
The Acura RDX is a compact crossover SUV that has an athletic chassis and uses premium luxury materials. While it’s more affordable than similar vehicles by Porsche
or Mercedes-Benz
, it’s just as tech-savvy and equally as fun to drive. But what’s the difference between the 2021 and 2022 model years, and which one should you purchase? Let’s dive in.
Pricing
Pricing for the 2022 RDX has gone up by over $1,000 for the base trim, and by varying amounts for higher-priced models. Let’s take a look:
General specs
Although the 2022 does get some significant upgrades, none of them have to do with the vehicle’s powertrain—which means its basic specs are pretty much identical.

Fuel economy
Because the powertrains for the 2022 and 2021 RDX are identical, fuel economy ratings are exactly the same as well. Both the 2021 and 2022 Acura RDX receive EPA ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 25 mpg.

Safety ratings
Both models get identical safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA): a perfect five out of five stars. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) only chose the 2021 model as a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle.
This is thanks to a host of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
For both model years, several other driver-assistance features are available with the Technology package.
Styling and interior changes
Here’s what really sets the 2022 RDX apart from the 2021 model.
The first major difference for the 2022 model year is a noticeable facelift, which includes tweaks to the SUV’s grille, larger air intakes on the front bumper, and a revised rear bumper with rectangular exhaust tips. Two new colors are also available—Liquid Carbon Metallic and Phantom Violet Pearl.
Inside, the RDX's interior is enhanced with new standard and optional tech features. All models now come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as Amazon Alexa integration. A wireless smartphone charging pad is now available and Technology models now offer an interior ambient-lighting system with 27 colors.
2022 Acura RDX vs. 2021 Acura RDX: Which should you buy?
If you’re trying to spend as little money as possible, the 2021 Acura RDX is your obvious choice. However, if you have a more flexible budget, then it may be worthwhile looking at the 2022 model—especially if you’re someone who loves having access to the latest technology.
Otherwise, the choice between the two model years really comes down to exterior aesthetics. Choose which one you think looks the best!
