Porsche instigated some serious family rivalry when it released the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport. This swoon-worthy racecar is the sibling of the street legal
Cup racecar. And there's only gearbox choice on the Clubsport, the venerable seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
This type of power and speed doesn't come cheap. If you want to get behind the wheel of a track-ready Clubsport, you can expect to pay $229,000. On the other hand, if you want a 718 Cayman GT4 that you can drive around town, the non-racing version has a much lower price tag of $143,050.
The aerodynamics of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
knows that a racecar can't be weighed down. According to the automaker, the Clubsport comes in at 1,320 kg (approximately 2,910 pounds).
Porsche has said the lightweight body consists of "sustainable materials”. "Natural fiber composites" make up the doors, fixed rear wing, integrated sideblades, and aluminium supports.
Out on the track, safety is just as important as speed. The "competition" version of the Clubsport comes race-ready by adhering to all international safety standards set forth by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile).
Safety features include an FIA-approved extinguishing system, while the three-way shock absorbers hold steady on uneven surfaces. Meanwhile, the Clubsport's "track day" version has a handheld extinguisher and fixed shock absorbers.
Porsche's hope for Clubsport drivers: 'We want you to have both—fun and be quick'
In the video release on Nov 17, 2021, Porsche representatives spoke about the new Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. According to Motorsport Project Leader Kay-Alexander Breitbach, the new GT4 RS is "one leap forward for experienced drivers."
Breitbach goes on to say that amateur drivers won't be left in the dust, as the vehicle is still a "turnkey race car, easy to use and easy to handle." Lastly, he says to all Clubsport drivers, "We want you to have both—fun and be quick."
Fun and speed aside, aerodynamics and handling are key areas for race car development. Per Breitbach, the new Clubsport has a sword stabilizer and a longer splitter. You can try out the car for yourself starting in February 2022, when the first Clubsports are scheduled to arrive at dealerships.
