After 16 long years since the release of the base mid-engine Porsche Cayman GT4, the automaker has officially announced the upcoming RS (RennSport, or racing sport) version. It's got souped-up everything and offers performance that consumers have come to expect from

What went into making the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS?
Obviously, lots of planning went into designing and perfecting the Cayman GT4 RS. Some of the main focus points were improved aerodynamics, engine output, and performance, according to
Car and Driver
.All of that translates into working on things that make the Cayman zoom and vroom.
The sound of the engine was also a consideration, according to Andreas Preuninger, the head of Porsche's GT department.
Preuninger said that Porsche was looking for a "quality noise" over just the
loud, roaring engine sound
of previous GTs, as reported by Car and Driver. The refined sound is thanks to the larger side air intakes and exhaust of the GT4 RS.Cayman GT4 RS performance and specs
The GT4 RS comes equipped with the 911 GT3's incredible 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine. With that, you're looking at 493 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, according to Car and Driver.
It comes standard with the revolutionary seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. Preuninger said there isn’t a manual option available that can reconcile the GT4 RS’s mid-mounted engine with its power and torque.
The GT4 RS is meant to be a sports car for general audiences, not professional racing. Porsche does reassure that it has "the genes of a race car," though, according to
USA Today
. With that, you can also expect a top speed of 196 mph in seventh gear.Features and handling
To facilitate better handling and control of its power, the GT4 RS is equipped with aerodynamic features that are cool and functional. In the front, there is an adjustable diffuser and improved front spoiler. There are also louver vents on the rear fenders to lower air pressure in the wheel wells.
A rear wing (a high decklid spoiler) also helps with downforce and efficiency. To further balance the power-to-weight ratio, the hood and front fenders are made of plastic reinforced with carbon fiber. Porsche also shaved off pounds of curb weight by using lighter door panels with fabric door opening loops.
The GT4 RS was also lowered slightly by 1.2 inches. The chassis enjoys ball joints for the suspension mounts and Bilstein shock absorbers, which dampen vibrations.
Rounding out the cool features are standard 20-inch forged aluminum rims and cast iron brake rotors. The even lighter PCCB carbon-ceramic disc rotors are also optional.
