, Wyoming is the most popular state for pickup trucks. New Jersey ranks dead last for truck owners. These results aren’t too surprising if we look at them more closely.
Why does Wyoming love pickup trucks?
Wyoming, known as “The Cowboy State”, buys the largest share of used pickups at just over 37%. It’s no surprise, really.
Being situated near the Rocky Mountains, drivers need a car
they can depend on to navigate harsh winters and tough terrain. They also want to be able to use one car to haul both heavy loads and the whole family. Behind Wyoming, the other states that buy the most pickup trucks are other states with mountainous or rougher terrain, and a need for a work truck that can double as a family vehicle, such as Montana, Idaho, South Dakota and Alaska.
No need for trucks in New Jersey
In New Jersey, pickup trucks aren’t nearly as in demand
. Trucks make up only 7.8% of the used vehicles purchased by New Jersey drivers. The only car less in demand in the state are minivans.
iSeeCars’ data suggests this is also to be expected. The top 10 least popular states for pickup trucks, with the exception of Illinois, are coastal states like New Jersey.
Consumers who live in flatter, or coastal states, typically don’t have a need for the capabilities of pickup. And with the generally higher price of these types of vehicles, it doesn’t make sense to use them as an everyday mode of transport.
Whether you’re in the market for a nice used pickup truck or not, it’s worth thinking about whether it’s the type of car that serves you best.
