Mercedes is a brand known for pushing the envelope in style, technology, and innovation with iconic vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz
, as well as sweeping electrification initiatives
. However, they have recently outdone themselves with an offering from their high-performance subsidiary AMG. This new ride packs a serious punch that is sure to delight fans of the German automaker. Mercedes-AMG presents the most powerful customer sports car ever
As reported by Car and Driver
, this year marks the 55th anniversary of the founding of AMG Engine Production and Development Limited, and Mercedes decided to pull out all the stops for the occasion. The automaker has unveiled the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series, an exclusive model they are billing as the "most powerful customer sports car" ever built by AMG. Currently, they've limited this exciting new vehicle's production to 55 units to pay homage to AMG's 55 years in existence. And while the Track Series is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, it's been built to standards matching the GT3 and GT4 race cars, including the integrated roll cage, fire suppression system, and custom bucket seats. All this means that the Track Series is not road legal but is, as its name implies, only meant to be driven on a track.
What makes the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series so powerful?
The heart of the Track Series beats within the 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine and flat-plane crankshaft that gives the Mercedes-AMG Black Series its exceptional performance. However, the performance similarities end there, as the artisans at AMG have beefed up the figures. The V8 engine operates with 734 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.
With 14 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque more than the Black Series, this behemoth will provide an exhilarating performance on any track. Just be sure not to get too carried away.
The engine isn't the only part that has received innovative upgrades
An engine is only as good as the car it's powering, and the Track Series looks and feels like a proper race car. As a result, the aerodynamics package has been significantly boosted, with a higher-downforce front splitter and a modified, mechanically adjustable rear wing. In addition, carbon fiber comprises the hood, sills, wing, rear apron, and back door, reducing the curb weight of the Track Series to just 3,086 pounds.
The interior of the Track Series is highly indicative of the specifications to which the Track Series has been built, with a comprehensive motorsport safety package. A roll cage of high tensile steel supports the car's frame with an extrication hatch built into the roof for added safety. The bucket seats come equipped with a five-point safety harness and ergonomic foaming for added comfort.
If customers would like to purchase a Track Series, they will have to deal with Mercedes-AMG directly. The MSRP of AMG's new offering is listed at $405,575, making it a pricey ride. However, it could be well worth the price tag for the German automaker's level of performance.
