When most Americans think of Mercedes-Benz
, they tend to think of highly luxurious vehicles. While this is a fair assessment, many tend to overlook that the German automaker also likes to make really fast cars. The company is reminding the public of that by making some impressive AMG models
, including the newly redesigned AMG SL63. While any AMG will probably have expensive car insurance
, that shouldn't deter you from appreciating its magnificent engineering. History of AMG
AMG was originally founded as a racing forge in 1967 near the city of Stuttgart. The company was founded by former Mercedes engineers Erhard Melcher and Hans Werner Aufrecht. Their last names are where the "A" and "M" come from in the company name. "G" is for their hometown of Grobaspach.
While originally only focused on racing engines, the company expanded to build custom race cars, largely inspired by the quality standards of Mercedes. In time, AMG would be bought out by the same parent company that owns Mercedes. Today, AMG is responsible for building the more sporty cars of Mercedes. In a way, you could say AMG is like Shelby is to Ford.
The AMG workshop would become involved in Mercedes-AMG SL63. The SL63 is a true speed demon, living up to the high standards established by the AMG name.
What are the specs of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63?
While most car companies are dealing with a shortage of V8 engines, that won't be the case for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63. The SL63 is available in two trims, both carrying a beefy 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, as reported by Car Buzz
. This powerful engine can generate 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. However, the 0-60 time is a little bit disappointing for a car of this caliber. It can trot to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Not bad at all, but not as good as other sports cars in the same price range. The speed stats are likely a little low due to the roomer cabin. The two-door convertible can seat four, and there is plenty of space in the back row for a set of golf clubs.
However, the interior does not disappoint. Black leather paneling is complemented by a glowing blue metallic accent that gives the SL63 a futuristic look. While most carmakers are going overboard on minimalist controls, Mercedes left plenty of knobs and buttons on the control panel for easier driving.
Buying the SL63
Hopefully you're not too excited about the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63, because buying one may be a little difficult. Mercedes hasn't released official pricing details yet, but we expect pricing to start around $175,000. The cheaper SL55 will probably go for $135,000.
Additionally, it is unclear when the SL63 will be available in the U.S. market. We would expect it to arrive sooner rather than later, as the convertible season has already arrived. But Mercedes has made no official announcement as to when it will arrive on this side of the Atlantic.
