Yes, a tuner will void your Ford’s warranty, specifically the powertrain warranty. However, the other elements of your factory warranty will likely stay intact.
Tuners can adjust your vehicle for speed, fuel efficiency, and drivability by adjusting things like ignition timing, air-fuel ratios, spark plug gaps, and engine chips. This is considered a standard modification and is perfectly legal—but it almost always voids your powertrain warranty.
The powertrain warranty covers your engine, transmission, driveline, and their various components—the ones directly affected by a tuner. Should something happen to your powertrain after a tuner is used, you’ll have to pay for those damages out of pocket.
However, the remaining elements of your warranty should not be affected—so long as their issue was, in no way, affected by the tuner. For example, if your window regulator goes out after tuning your vehicle, it should still be covered under your warranty, as it is not a system affected by a tune.
Keep in mind that, according to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, Ford is required to provide proof that a particular aftermarket part, accessory, or tune led to an engine failure or other issue before denying your claim. However, large and well-equipped companies like Ford typically have no issues successfully doing so.
