Why does my Chevy have carpet in the wheel wells?

I had to change the tire on my Chevy this weekend and I realized that the wheel wells had carpet on them. This seems so bizarre to me. Why does my Chevy have carpet in the wheel wells?

Carpeted wheel wells may seem strange but they actually have an interesting purpose. Wheel wells are sometimes carpeted to reduce road noise.
Carpeted wheel wells can be easily cleaned with a power washer and a hard scrubbing brush. If you don’t have a power washer, a hose with a nozzle attachment will also work well.
