Why does Florida have toll roads?

I was on vacation a week ago, and I realized that Florida had toll roads almost everywhere. I come from a state that doesn’t have any toll roads, so I thought the sheer number of them in Florida was a bit strange. Why does Florida have toll roads when other states don’t?

Florida has toll roads as a way of providing reliable, well-maintained, and convenient transportation to residents and tourists across the state, as well as a way to facilitate interstate and intrastate commerce.
However, the reason behind the number of toll roads in Florida comes down to taxes. Florida is one of only seven states without an income tax, so many of its projects and services—including toll roads—don’t have a tax base to keep up with repairs and maintenance. As a result, the Sunshine State uses tolls to pay for these works instead of taxes.
To date, Florida has 734 miles of toll roads—far more than any other state in the country.
