Who is exempt from wearing a seatbelt in Massachusetts?

Are there any exceptions to the seatbelt laws in Massachusetts? If so, who is exempt? Sometimes it’s really difficult to get my son into a seatbelt, so I’m curious to know whether or not it’s legally required for him.

The only people who are exempt from wearing a seatbelt in
Massachusetts
are children under 12 years of age and adults in vehicles manufactured before July 1, 1966 (as these vehicles did not include seat belts in their original design).
Children under 12 are still required to be properly restrained, however! Instead of a seatbelt, children must be restrained by sitting in a child’s car seat of the proper size. If you travel with children who are not properly restrained in a child’s car seat, you may face fines similar to those imposed on adults driving without a seatbelt.
If there are medical reasons for your difficulty in properly restraining your child, however, you may ask for a medical exemption. If you wish to pursue this course of action, you’ll need to talk to your child’s doctor about a Certificate of Exemption to show to law enforcement if necessary.
