Who invented the seat belt?
I own a Tesla Model S and we recently got a seat belt system safety enhancement over the summer. It got me thinking about how Tesla is considered an inventive company, but who invented the seat belt in the first place?

Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin invented the modern three-point seat belt in 1959.
There are actually several others who have some claim to the invention. But here are the primary brains behind the seat belt’s evolution:
- George Cayley introduced lap belts for use on a glider aircraft in the mid-1800s
- Edward J. Claghorn patented the first vehicular seat belt (harness) in 1885 for use in New York City taxis
- Barney Oldfield commissioned a parachute manufacturer to design a seat belt harness for his Indy 500 vehicle in 1922. It was the first safety restraint used in the Indy 500, which began in 1911.
- Nils Bohlin designed the three-point seat belt in 1959, which became the prototype for modern seat belts.
Safety features have luckily evolved from early vehicles, beginning with the seat belt and continuing today with amenities like collision warning and blind-spot monitoring. At the forefront of much of this safety innovation is Tesla, and here to match that safety with some innovation of our own is
