Insurance companies usually write totaled cars off and send them to the salvage yard. The car is then stripped of usable parts and sent to the car crusher. If your car is totaled, it’s possible that it will meet this fate. However, you can give your totaled car a second chance with a rebuilt title.
Keeping a car with a salvage title in Utah is possible. You won’t be able to drive it until you get a rebuilt title, though. Here to help you through that process is the

What is a rebuilt title?

A
rebuilt title
is given to once-totaled cars that have since been repaired and guaranteed safe to drive.
In order to receive a rebuilt title, a car owner must first obtain a salvage title. Salvage titles are given to cars that are too damaged to drive, but they
can be replaced
if you follow certain guidelines.

Does my car need a rebuilt title?

You’ll need a rebuilt title to drive your car or make it easier to sell once it’s been declared a salvage vehicle. It’s possible to find a car enthusiast who’s willing to fix up a salvage title, or even a buyer who isn’t risk-averse, but don’t count on it. Experts advise against buying cars with
salvage titles
.
A rebuilt title doesn’t replace the history of a car, but it does mean that the car has been repaired, inspected, and certified safe to drive. A car that was once salvaged must have a rebuilt title to be safely and legally driven.

How to get a rebuilt title in Utah

In Utah, a rebuilt title is a type of branded title also known as a restored title. Getting one will require you to first obtain a salvage title.

Apply for the salvage title

You’ll need to go to the Utah DMV in person to apply for a salvage title. Salvage titles must be applied for within 10 days of a total loss settlement or the date on which the car was damaged.
Be sure to bring the car’s current title and payment for the $6 title application fee.
As part of this process, you will also need the vehicle to pass a
safety inspection
conducted by the Utah Highway Patrol. Fees for this inspection range from $14 to $40 depending on the type of vehicle.

Make the necessary repairs to your vehicle

Be sure to keep your receipts and bills of sale for any parts used during the repair process and take before and after photos of the vehicle.
