First off, congratulations on landing your new job! It’s difficult to say what the best year for used BMW 7 Series is—as BMW’s flagship models, the 7 Series sedans are well established for their remarkable quality and performance. It’s a bit subjective, too, given the huge aesthetic swings this series makes from one generation to the next.
The 6th-generation G11 and G12 models, produced from 2015 to 2022, didn’t seem to live up to the expectations of some reviewers or owners—Car and Driver noted that they “succeed mainly at being expensive”, and lacked the performance you’d expect from a 7 Series BMW. But car reviewers are notoriously fickle with their expectations, so take that with a grain of salt.
When shopping for a used car, newer is usually better, so you’re likely looking at those G11 and G12 models. If that’s the case, consider getting a 2019 or newer model. Some say the 2017 model was a particularly great year for the 7 Series, but a big facelift in 2019 brought in a slew of new features, including Android Auto functionality.
Our top choice would have to be the 2021 BMW 7-Series. It’s younger and will presumably have lower mileage. It’s from the post-facelift era of the sixth generation. And it’s a luxurious, comfortable, well-engineered ride. The infotainment system is a little fussy, but overall this was a great model year for the car.
