Who holds the title on a car loan?

I just started shopping for my first new car today, and I’ve never had to take out a car loan before. But just out of curiosity, who holds the title on a car loan?

You must be excited to shop for your first new car, and it’s natural to have many questions! When you have a
car loan
, the lender holds the title in 41 states while the borrower holds the title in the nine other states.
If you’re in one of the majority states, you won’t have to worry about your car title. However, if you’re in one of the nine states where the borrower (you) holds the title, keep the title in a secure space such as a safe deposit box or a safe.
Once you find a lender and the car you want, don’t forget that you also need
car insurance
