Which extension cords are safe to charge an electric car with?

My complex doesn’t do assigned parking spots, and often when I get home all the spots nearest to the chargers are taken. I’m thinking of getting an extension cord so that I don’t have to worry as much. Which extension cords are safe to charge an electric car with?

The parking game…never fun. Extension cords can be a solution to a reach problem, but bear in mind that you’ll have to be
smart about safety
.
Pick cords that are well-insulated, and don’t use more than one if possible, as linking several extension cords together can cause overheating. Speak to an electrician, if you can, to make sure that the cords are correctly aligned to their power outputs. And don’t expose cords to the elements.
Two charging cable options are the NEMA and the J1772. These are both well-insulated and water-resistant—good choices if you’re going to go the extension cord route.
