Which electric vehicles get access to the carpool lane?

I remember the days when owning a Prius (with or without a sticker) meant you were welcome in the carpool lane, but I feel like the rules keep changing and I don’t know which ones are up-to-date. Which electric vehicles get access to the carpool lane?

You’re right to be confused—the rules have indeed evolved over time, and they vary state to state. The upshot: alternative fuel vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and inherently low emission vehicles are all eligible for a ride in the carpool lane, depending on the rules of your state.
If you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, or Virginia, your EV may be eligible for HOV (high occupancy vehicle, or carpool lane) exemptions. And each state has different requirements for indicating exemption status, so be prepared to make adjustments to
license plates
, decals, or toll transponders.
Once you’ve cleared your EV for takeoff, you’re ready to whiz by the people in the regular lanes. Shoulda gone electric!
