Where is the 1994 Volvo 940’s OBD port located?

I bought a used 1994 Volvo 940 a couple of months ago and just today I saw that the “Check Engine” light had turned on. I was going to use an OBD scanner to check for error codes, but I can’t find the port anywhere. Where is the 1994 Volvo 940’s OBD port located?

The reason you can’t find your 1994
Volvo 940’s
OBD-II port is because it doesn’t have one—it wasn’t until 1995/96 that OBD-II ports would be added to vehicles, replacing the standard OBD-I system.
Fortunately, retrieving diagnostic trouble codes from an OBD-I system is a fairly simple process and does not require any special tools or scanners, though it does take a little longer than you might be used to. Here’s what you need to do:
  1. Open your hood and locate the OBD-I connector unit(s). Look to the rear of the engine bay on the driver’s side and see one to two black rectangular boxes mounted in front of the shock tower.
  2. Remove the OBD-I connector unit’s case. On the face of the OBD-I connector unit you should see a button, probe, six sockets, and a light.
  3. Plug the probe into the first socket (electronic transmission), second socket (fuel injection), third socket (anti-brake lock system), or sixth socket (ignition system).
  4. Switch the ignition to the “ON” position but do not turn the engine on.
  5. Press the button once for at least 1 second and no more than 3 seconds.
  6. Watch the light and count the number of flashes. A 3-second interval separates each series of flashes, and there are three series of flashes.
  7. If the light flashes 1-1-1, there are no error codes stored for that socket.
To make things easier for yourself, we’d recommend searching online for a list of the 1994 Volvo 940’s error codes and their meanings.
