Where is the 1990 Honda Accord’s OBD port location?

I’ve got an old car that I’ve been using for my commutes for years, and I just noticed the check engine light come on that other day. My buddy has an OBD reader he let me borrow, but I need to know where to plug it in. Can you tell me where the OBD port is on a 1990 Honda Accord?

Wow! Hondas are relatively reliable cars, but it’s awesome you’ve kept yours running for so long.
Your 1990
Honda Accord
actually does not have the type of onboard diagnostics (OBD) port most of us are familiar with. Instead of a long, rectangular OBD-II port, you’ll be looking for an OBD1 connector—a small, blue two-pin connector located under the dash on the passenger side by the kick panel.
Unfortunately, your friend’s OBD reader isn’t going to work with your Accord. The compatible ports weren’t standardized in car manufacturing until 1996. Instead, you’ll need to get a jumper wire to insert into the blue port. With the jumper wire plugged in, follow these steps to find your Accord’s trouble code:
  • Hop in the driver’s seat and turn the key to the run position, but don’t crank the engine.
  • You’ll see the
    check engine warning light
flashing rather than staying lit up.
  • Count the flashes to find out what code number you’re dealing with. For example, six fast flashes mean a code six, while one long flash followed by two fast flashes means a code 12.
  • There will be a long pause between each code, so you’ll know whether you’re dealing with a single code or more than one.
Once you know your trouble codes, you can look up what they mean in your vehicle owner’s manual to find out what type of

you’ll need to perform to get your
Honda
back up and running again.
