Two neighbors in Blackpool, England—Billy Lyons and William Walmsley—started a company making motorcycle sidecars called the Swallow Sidecar Company. They dropped this moniker in favor of the acronym “SS” when they began making sports cars. The innovative SS 1 came out in 1932 as one of the first sports cars ever produced—and it was a huge success.
When the company became more popular, the business partners wanted a new name that would capture the feline-like agility of their new car. The 1935 SS Jaguar 2.5l Saloon was another massive hit. A decade later in the midst of World War II, the company’s initials came to represent Adolf Hitler’s security brigade. That’s when the company officially changed its name to Jaguar.
