How can I travel with a cake in my car?

We have our daughter’s birthday this weekend, and the place we ordered her cake from is pick-up only. The last thing we want to do is ruin the cake while driving, and I have no idea what the best technique is for cake-moving. How can I travel with a cake in my car?

First off, happy birthday to your daughter! Secondly, I want you to know transporting a cake in your car is easier than you may think.
There are a couple of do’s and don’ts you should always keep in mind.
Do:
  • Place your cake on the floorboards. This provides the flattest surface area and the lowest chance of tipping the cake.
  • Add some non-slip fabric or a blanket beneath the cake to prevent sliding.
  • If your trunk opens up to the rest of the car and is flat, you can place your cake back there.
  • Always put your cake in a box. The bakery will hopefully provide you with one, but be sure to double-check before you pick it up so you’re not left with an exposed cake.
Don’t:
  • Set your cake on the seats. This will almost certainly lead to some slipping, sliding, and tilting.
  • If your back seats don’t fold down to open up your trunk area, don’t place your cake back there.
When you’re traveling with your cake, remember that slow and steady driving will better protect the cake. Plan to make sure you can take your time driving from one point to the next.
