Where did the name Porsche come from?

I’m a huge history buff, and I’ve recently gotten into automotive history. However, I admittedly don’t know much about exotic cars or foreign cars, so I want to learn more about Porsche in particular. Where did Porsche get its name?

The Porsche name comes from the surname of its founder, Ferdinand Porsche.
Born in Austria-Hungary in 1875, Porsche was an automotive engineer by trade with a penchant for building experimental vehicles and racing machines. He founded Porsche in 1931 as an automotive design and consulting firm, and eventually created the first Porsche prototype in 1948.
Porsche produced some of the most iconic vehicles and ideas in automotive history. Among his contributions, he created:
  • The first hybrid vehicle
  • The Volkswagen Beetle
  • Mercedes-Benz SS/SSK roadsters
  • The Auto Union race car
  • Several other components that led to improved power in Porsche vehicles
