Like many other American automakers, GMC originated in Detroit, Michigan, right around the turn of the 20th century. In 1902, brothers Morris and Max Grabowsky founded the Grabowsky Motor Company—hence the GMC acronym.
However, the company changed its name to the Rapid Vehicle Motor Company shortly after its founding. In 1909, William C. Durant—the cofounder of General Motors and Chevrolet—purchased the company, renaming it GMC once again—this time for the General Motors Company.
If you’re a fan of the GMC brand, the best way to indulge your curiosity is by visiting the GM Heritage Center Collection in Detroit. This GM-centric museum offers insight into the history and engineering of the company, as well as 600 vehicles on display for your viewing pleasure.
