328i’s OBD port is located relatively low to the ground, and it’s covered by a panel to protect it from debris, which makes it easy to miss. But the panel itself is conveniently labeled “OBD.”
The OBD2 scanner plugs into the OBD port and can provide you with error codes for any detected problems. If those error codes trace back to an issue you can fix yourself, you avoided an unnecessary expense at the auto shop. Or, it could confirm your car has a problem that does require a mechanic’s attention.
That said, not all OBD2 scanners work the same way, so if you haven’t already, you’ll want to confirm with your friend how theirs works to avoid accidentally damaging it.
