Where are Ford vehicles made?

I like to buy American cars when I can, but I heard that Ford makes their vehicles outside of the country. Is this true?

Ford vehicles are made in 15 different countries on five continents around the world. You can use the first three characters of the Ford VIN to identify the country of origin.
Here is a list of all the countries where Ford vehicles are built and their respective VIN country codes.
  • Argentina: 8A–8E
  • Canada 2
  • Germany: SN–ST
  • China: L
  • India: MA–ME
  • Mexico 3A–3W
  • Romania: UU–UZ
  • Russia: SX–SW
  • South Africa: AA–AH
  • Spain: VS–VW
  • Thailand: ML–MR
  • Turkey: NL–NR

Each assembly plant is responsible for the manufacture of different Ford models for different markets. For example, Ford Focuses built for the US market are assembled in Wayne, Michigan, but Focuses made for European markets are assembled in Saarlouis, Germany.
