When is the right time to cancel my Nationwide policy?

When should I cancel my Nationwide policy? I am selling my car tomorrow, so I want to stop the insurance ASAP and avoid unnecessary payments.

You can cancel your
Nationwide
policy as soon as the title of the car is signed over to the new owner. Once you are no longer the owner of the car, your financial responsibility for it ends.
Before you cancel your
car insurance
, make sure to check with your local DMV. Depending on your state, you may be required to surrender your license plates before stopping your policy.
Some states also require residents to pay an annual property tax on their cars. If this is the case, you will need to notify your county’s tax assessor. Unfortunately, the DMV does not inform the tax assessor for you and you can be taxed for a car you no longer own if they aren’t notified.
To cancel with Nationwide, you can call your local agent or their main phone number at (877)-669-6877. The only information you will need is:
  • Your name and date of birth
  • Your Nationwide policy number
  • Date of title transfer
