When driving on packed snow, what should I do?

I just moved from Texas to Idaho and I’m not quite used to the weather, especially when I’m driving. While my neighbors assured me that the state plows the roads, they said packed snow on roads is still common. How can I drive carefully on packed snow?

Congratulations on your move to
Idaho
! Weather is definitely an issue in the Gem State, so you’re smart to be concerned.
When driving on packed snow, you should follow these tips:
  • Drive slowly
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Accelerate and brake slowly
  • Accelerate at low revolutions and shift to a higher gear whenever possible
  • If the car skids, steer into the skid to correct the skid
  • Stay calm
You should also consider a
winter emergency kit
in case you get stranded or drive off the road on accident. This can save your life, especially if you’re in a rural or mountainous area.
