Hydroplaning is super scary! Hydroplaning occurs when there’s water hitting your tires quicker than they can handle. Water pressure pushes the water beneath your tires, separating them from the road. Without the necessary traction, your tires will skid or slide across the surface, causing you to lose control of steering, braking, and acceleration.
Hydroplaning can happen anytime the road is wet—including a downpour and the first few minutes of a light rain. You’re more likely to hydroplane if you’re going over 35 mph, especially if there’s any oil residue on the road.
