In New York, how many points can you get before you get a suspended license?

Does New York suspend your license for having too many driving points or tickets? I’m 24 and just got my license for the first time, so I’m still learning a lot about traffic laws.

Under
New York
law, you can get your license suspended if you get 11 points or more in an 18-month period. However, speeding ticket point values vary within the state depending on how fast you were driving over the speed limit:
  • 1 to 10 MPH over is worth 3 points
  • 11 to 20 MPH over is worth 4 points
  • 21 to 30 MPH over is worth 6 points
  • 31 to 40 MPH over is worth 8 points
  • 40 MPH over or more is 11 points
Driving points can also affect your car insurance rates, with more points forcing you to pay higher premiums for the same coverage. Since your rates are already pretty high as a new driver, you definitely don’t want to raise your rates any further if you can avoid it.
