When does a driving conviction fall off your record?

I was pulled over about two weeks ago and received a speeding ticket. I know that speeding tickets add points to your license and can increase your insurance rates. How long do I have to wait until a driving conviction falls off my record?

Sorry to hear that you received a
speeding ticket
! The good news is that most speeding tickets fall off your record within 1-5 years. After the time frame is up, you won’t see much, if any, impact on your car insurance as a result of the ticket. You’ll also lose those points on your license.
Some states only keep a speeding ticket on your record for one year, including:
  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • New Mexico
  • Pennsylvania
  • Wyoming
However, Hawaiian law states that speeding tickets remain on your record for a whopping 10 years. But regardless of where you live, try not to get any speeding tickets, as it can adversely affect your car insurance rates.
Here is a list of some other common driving convictions and when you can expect them to fall of your record on average:
  • Reckless driving - 10 years
  • DUI or DWI - 10 years
  • Driving without a license - 5 years
  • Failure to appear in court on a traffic case - 5 years
  • Driving without car insurance - 3-5 years
If your car insurance rates go up as a result of a ticket, don’t just accept the higher price tag as an inevitability. Instead, use the
