When did Nissan buy Datsun?

Now that Datsun cars are gone for good, I’m curious to know how long Nissan has owned the brand. When did Nissan buy Datsun?

The now-defunct Datsun brand originated at the beginning of the 1930s—and was quickly taken over by
Nissan
. Nissan gained ownership of the Datsun in 1934.
During its prime years of production, Datsun vehicles served as the car counterparts to Nissan trucks—but by the mid-1980s, Nissan had begun discontinuing Datsun-branded cars and replacing them with the Nissans we know and love today. But in 2013, Datsun made a comeback—and Nissan began re-releasing Datsun-branded vehicles for select markets.
Over time, however, the marque failed to see major profitability. As a result, it was recently discontinued (for the second time) in April of 2022. Nissan’s other marque—
Infiniti
—is also in decline, with a drop of nearly 50% in sales over the last five years, according to Business Insider.
Today, if you drive a defunct-branded vehicle (like a Datsun) you could face higher
car insurance
premiums since parts for discontinued cars are often harder to source—and more expensive to buy.
