In the ‘80s and ‘90s, despite being considered one of the “Big Three” automakers in the United States, Chrysler was still repaying the billion-plus in debt it took on to avoid bankruptcy in the 1970s. In 2007, Cerberus Capital Management bought Chrysler from the company.
Those obviously wouldn’t be the last of Chrysler’s financial troubles, however. The company approached bankruptcy again following the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and after it repaid its debt in 2011, Fiat bought the United States Treasury’s shares as well as additional company shares, and these two merged to become Fiat Chrysler.
