Just two years later, in 1909, Oakland became part of General Motors (GM). The first Pontiac was not released until later that same year.
The Pontiac was extremely popular—more popular than any other Oakland vehicle—and thus became its own GM division when Oakland was canceled in 1931.
Pontiacs were then produced by GM for decades before the brand was eliminated (along with Hummer and Saturn) in 2010.
