When did GEICO start using the gecko?

I’m in my thirties and I don’t really remember a time when the GEICO gecko wasn’t a thing. While I still like a number of GEICO’s other advertising campaigns — namely the GEICO Becoming Your Parents ads — I wanted to know more about the gecko. When did they start using him?

Originally voiced by actor Kelsey Grammer of Cheers, The Simpsons, and Frasier fame,
GEICO
started using the gecko in 1999. The gecko has remained a beloved mainstay of GEICO’s advertising campaigns since then, becoming one of the more iconic ad mascots in modern memory.
The first commercial featured the gecko, named Martin, climbing up to the top of a podium where he said: “This is my final plea: I am a gecko, not to be confused with GEICO, which could save you hundreds on car insurance. So stop calling me!”
If GEICO’s advertising is doing its job, you might be considering them for your next car insurance policy. But before you do, download the
